Hurricane Harvey left the Gulf Coast devastated in 2017, destroying homes, taking lives, and leaving entire neighborhoods in complete chaos for months. A terrier mix Ava, who was six months old at that time, experienced the worst because a week after the hurricane passed through, she was shot in her right eye. Her ordeal did not end there because when her attackers realized she was still alive, they tried beating her to death with a hammer. While Ava was able to survive both attacks, she suffered for weeks without care.
When she was found by rescuers from Houston BARC, her wounds had already started to heal on their own. Though shelters were almost full because they had to provide temporary housing for stray dogs abandoned by their families, Houston Pets Alive did not hesitate to take poor Ava in. HPA also found out that Ava needed multiple surgeries, which would require a vast amount of money. The injuries had made it difficult for her to hear, see, and eat.
The city might be at its lowest point, but they still managed to raise enough money for Ava’s medical care. She was also able to find a new foster parent two days after she was brought to the shelter. Kilyn and Fransisco provided a forever home for Ava, and they let her experience the love and affection she had missed out on. They also made sure she was as comfortable as possible until she was ready for her surgeries.
Despite the abuse Ava went through, she remained a sweet and happy dog, and this was why her foster family decided to name her Bubbles. That November, Bubbles was able to undergo surgery that lasted for three hours. The doctors removed the bullet that penetrated the skin behind her right ear. They also removed a section of her jawbone so she could open and close her mouth.
After the successful surgery, her foster family made sure that she would never miss out on experiencing joy, happiness, and love. All they wanted was for her to look forward to a brighter future with her new family.
